Video Process

Video Production Process

In order to achieve your goals and provide the required deliverables, some (not necessarily all) of the following project steps will be planned. Most steps require signoff by the Client before proceeding to the next step.

Pre-Production

  1. Initial Meeting - JK Design’s team will conduct a detailed brainstorming and project scope session to determine the audiences and establish the key goals and theme of the project, and project deliverables. Items to be discussed include: the length of video, content sources, if you need an original video shoot or animation or stock footage, crew requirements (director, actors, lighting, audio, etc), locations for shooting, video formats (standard or high def) and media requirements (hard disk, tape, etc). Timelines and production stages will also be discussed, including key sign off points. JK Design may also request to review your branding, previous videos and print materials. JK Design will subsequently write a "Production Brief" summarizing these project plans.
  2. Concept/Script Development - JK Design will create a video project concept (possibly using concept boards), treatment, and script, which provides the overall tempo and feel of the video. Once approved, JK Design may provide a companion shot list for each script. These shot lists would relate to specific scenes that need to be captured, in order to produce the video so it meets client requirements.
  3. Location Scout - As an option, JK Design will identify one or more shoot locations based on the creative requirements and production logistics. Once a location has been identified by either JK Design or the Client, JK Design will visit the site and plan each shot list. Hand-drawn maps may be created to document scene locations and crew areas.
  4. Storyboard - This step cannot be completed until the Script is finalized and approved. JK Design will outline the visual presentation of the script and may explain how the video will be shot. Storyboards will then be presented to the Client for review and approval. Storyboards must be used for projects that require animation.
  5. Additional/Ongoing Meetings - Meetings with the Client, location management and/or video crew will be coordinated by JK Design to discuss details and expectations prior to the video shoot. It is important that all location managers participate in these meetings.

Production

  1. Audio Recording/Voiceover - Should the script call for narration - JK Design can hire, coordinate and direct the talent and the recording session to ensure the appropriate mood is set with the voiceover narration. The Audio Recording/Voiceover is typically completed immediately after the Script is approved. Script changes or edits after talent has recorded voice will result in new session fees.
  2. Interface Design - If the video will be available on CD, DVD or Blu-Ray, the graphical interface design is begun at this point and design can run parallel to other steps.
  3. Video Shoot - JK Design will conduct an on-site video shoot with an HD DSLR Camera, three point lighting kit and audio equipment if needed. Videos are shot in high definition, unless otherwise specified by the client. Teleprompter, additional lighting/sound, second camera, set design and/or location rental and professional actors are available for additional costs.

Post-Production

  1. Paper Edit - JK Design (possibly with the Client) will review video footage and match up time codes from the footage to the script. Note that this step is not necessary for Motion-Graphics only projects.
  2. Digitize Footage - The digital video will be converted into an editable format. JK Design may also create an Edit Decision List. The Client can either review the footage at JK Design or the video and time code can be provided to the Client for review.
  3. Music Tracks - If a music tract will be utilized, JK Design will search for, select and purchase 3 to 4 royalty free music tracks for the Client to select from. Original recordings are also possible for additional project and licensing fees.
  4. Audio Editing - The audio from the voiceover recording session will be edited for optimal clarity, quality, size and content for integration into the final video.
  5. Editing and Titling - Rough cuts of video segments will be prepared and JK Design may request to meet with you to discuss editing goals/requirements. We utilizes several edit systems including Avid, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects, however, other editing tools may also be selected per project specifications. Final video editing will be completed by JK Design per delivery timelines.
  6. Motion Graphics/Animation Option - JK Design can create graphical animation that compliments your video footage, which may include lighting, textual and image effects. In addition, 3D modeling of a product, equipment or a room/facility, etc can also be provided for additional project fees. Actual fees depend on your requirements, and whether or not you are supplying any CAD files of the item you want animated. Adobe After Effects is normally utilized to create 2D animation, and 3D typically requires Maya.
  7. Interface Design - Should your Video require a menu system (such as with a DVD or USB Video etc), JK Design can create a menu system. If your video interface will have a chapter or topic index, an XML Sheet may be created relating to timing points.
  8. Testing & Output - The video will be compressed and output for standard media types using appropriate file formats such as Flash Video (FLV) and/or HTML5 & H.264 so they can be played on a Website, YouTube, iPhone/iPad, Android Device, CD/DVD, Flash USB Drive, or other media.
