Web Analytics/SEO Analyst

Web Analytics/SEO Analyst

JK Design (http://www.jkdesign.com), is a full service marketing agency with a 25+ year history. NJBiz has ranked us as one of their Top 50 New Jersey Internet Technology Firms annually since 2003! Our office is located in a relaxed environment located next to a pond in central New Jersey (Hillsborough). Most of our clients are also in central NJ.

Our Interactive team creates small to large Web sites and interactive applications including custom content management systems. We also create video productions that include videotaped and animated segments.

This is a freelance position ranging anywhere from 2 to 20+ hours per week, depending on client needs, and can be performed remotely from your home. It's a great gig for very Web savvy stay-at-home individuals. You must be very familiar with how basic SEO works, and the use of Google Analytics.

You would report to the Director of Interactive, but receive project direction from our Web Producers and other Account Managers. You may be asked to communicate directly with clients, to understand their reporting needs (however pricing discussions should always be via the Web Producer and/or Account Manager).

The following are general tasks that you would need to perform upon request. Consider this a checklist of items you would need to do, for most new JK Design Web clients:

SEO Tasks:

  1. Research keywords/phrases supplied by Client, using www.wordtracker.com and www.keywordspy.com – to determine the most effective keywords to target on a Client site, considering keyword popularity and likelihood (or not) of getting ranked with a particular keyword/phrase.
  2. Determine which pages on a Client site, should target which keywords/phrases. One keyword/phrase per page is ideal. Recommend new pages to create, to target a keyword.
  3. Use the Client’s CMS tools (Content Management System) to tweak their site’s Page URL’s (slugs), Page Titles (70 characters or less), Meta Keyword Tags, and Headers of pages (H1, H2, H3) to use the selected keyword/phrase for that page. Also write a Meta Description Tag (160 characters or less) that includes the targeted keyword for that page, and incorporates some content from the page content.
  4. For sites with Product Descriptions, use the CMS and ensure that Product Categories are using generic keywords/phrases that relate to the targeted keywords.
  5. Review the supplied Content and make small changes to incorporate the same keyword/phrase, into the Content body of the page.
  6. Create cross-links in the site, linking a targeted keyword/phrase on one page, to another directly related page.
  7. Bold and italicize keywords/phrases in the content, when it makes sense to in context. Bold/italicize does help rankings.
  8. Ensure that images have ALT text using the same targeted keyword/phrase for each page.
  9. Perform tests on some pages with http://validator.w3.org and notify programming staff of errors/issues in XHTML and CSS.
  10. Ensure that there is one Primary Domain and all other variations are pointing to the Primary, with a 301 redirect.
  11. Ensure that the XML Sitemap is working.
  12. Ensure that the robots.txt file exists, and that the sitemap.xml is linked, and that unnecessary directories and files are not being indexed.
  13. Setup Client Domain as a “Mission” on Web Position Gold (on JK Design’s SEO server) and report on current rankings with the targeted keywords, for Google and MSN/Bing (Yahoo is optional). Include up to 2 competitor domains. Ensure reports are available at http://seo.jkdesign.com/clientname (setup a username/password for access to this report).
  14. Run new Mission reports when requested by JK Design, or on a regular/predetermined basis. Review reports and possibly rerun Wordtracker and Keywordspy reports, and make a determination on what to change on the Client site, to better optimize for SEO. This may be Page Titles, Page Descriptions, Headers/H1/H2, ALT tags, Image names, Menu names, new keyword specific pages, or other ideas you as the SEO expert should have. Do not change any URL’s/slugs without client permission or without creating a redirect first.

Web Analytics Tasks:

  1. You should know Google Analytics inside and out, and be able to train our internal staff and clients via teleconference and WebEx, on the use of Google Analytics.
  2. Setup Google Analytics account and Webmaster Central configuration, using a generic client email address (which forwards to JK Design). Add the Google Analytics ID to client Web site via CMS.
  3. Ensure that new client sites have the Google Analytics code in footer, with correct Analytics ID.
  4. Setup custom Filters that will produce Keyword Ranking reports.
  5. Learn what information a client is seeking to view and setup custom Google reports to produce this information. This may include setting up Advanced Segmentation.
  6. Setup integrations between www.thinksend.com email marketing campaigns and client Web traffic. Setup and track other campaigns that may use banner ads, offline ads, or more.
  7. Setup ecommerce reporting and get loyalty and latency metrics, and identify our clients best revenue sources.
  8. Challenge the JK Design Web Producers and Development staff, on ways that we can better use Google Analytics to service our customers - whether that be including advanced integration within new Web sites or other means.

SEM Tasks:

  1. Use your SEO analysis from Wordtracker and KeywordSpy, in addition to the Web Position Gold reports, to determine which keywords/phrases are doing well in Organic Search, and which keywords/phrases should be used in PayPerClick/Paid Search campaigns.
  2. Setup Google AdWords account, MSN/Bing Search Advertising and/or Yahoo Sponsored Search, using a generic client email address (which forwards to JK Design). Add links from the client CMS to each different Search Vendor login page.
  3. Setup campaigns in the PPC/Search Engine accounts, using the targeted keywords/phrases that are not doing well in organic results. Tweak the campaign configuration to target budgetary restrictions and any regional and time-of-day requirements.
  4. Perform Link Building - create links from third party vendor sites, to client site, using keyword phrases as the anchor text of the link. When required, setup related "links" page on client site, back to these vendor sites. Also include instructions that potential linkers can use, noting the HTML for creating the link with the keyword in the anchor text.
  5. Automate Link Building by establishing a budget then setting up accounts for clients, on third party Link Building sites (working with bloggers, etc). Setup campaigns similar to PPC campaigns, but for Link Building instead of PPC.
  6. Analyze PPC/Search Engine Results and Link Building Results monthly and create summary reports for clients. Make recommendations on what to change in the campaign, in order to provide better return on investment. Remove keywords from campaigns if they have improved in organic results.
