A microsite, also known as a minisite, is a small Web site typically created to supplement a primary Web site. The microsite's home page often has it's own domain name.
The main purpose of a microsite versus the parent site, is to target just one product, service, event, or seasonal promotion - in a cohesive and to-the-point manner. Presenting the same material on a parent Web site with overall broader content, may dilute the message you could present on a smaller microsite design. However, microsites typically will link to the parent site, to cross market other items of interest. Microsites may also have a short lifespan, if you are only using it for a seasonal promotion or event.
An added benefit of creating a microsite, is you can focus additional content on search engine optimization friendly keywords and key phrases that relate to the microsite's topic.
Microsite development can also be a cost-effective way for a new business to create a starter site, with an easy to use Content Management System and a technical framework that you can build on to. Microsite development can typically be completed in weeks, versus months for a custom-built and feature-rich parent site.
