Challenge

JR Trading has been in the book business for over 20 years. They buy remainder books, “hurts,” overstocks and auctions in bulk by the truckload – and then sort, count, scan and catalog the books at their warehouse so they can be sold in smaller quantities. They then sell them to name-brand book distributors, stores and online discount websites. For many years, JR relied on a custom Windows-based inventory management system called Helix, which was developed and supported by a very small company. Helix also supplied data to JR’s website. However, both the Helix software and the website were plagued with bugs and lacked online purchasing capability. And when Helix’s management decided to retire, JR had to find a new solution.

Solution

JK Design spent over two months working with JR Trading to create a new Web-based inventory management system designed around JR’s current business processes. In addition, JK developed a highly customized, fully integrated e-commerce bookstore complete with a shopping cart, online payment processing, and a back-end order tracking system. Implementation took another two months, bringing the project to completion on time and within the projected budget. (To see the site in action, visit www.jrtradingbooks.com.)

Results

JR gave JK Design its highest rating: 10 out of 10. In their glowing review, they noted that “JK Design is very easy to work with, they explain all questions in detail in a way everyone understands, and the big factor is that they listen (a lost art). The finished product is a Web system that is easy to use – and makes my company seem larger than it really is.” JR has even asked to sell the Web-based system to similar wholesale book distributors. JR customers were similarly impressed and have also provided valuable feedback on the system; JK Design has implemented many of their suggestions.
