Challenge

Founded in 1904, Oticon is the oldest hearing aid manufacturer in the world. The company's pediatrics division is committed to consistently delivering excellent products, service, and support to pediatric hearing care professionals. As part of this mission, the pediatrics team provides product training to physicians across the country.

Oticon's training program is designed to inform doctors of advances in hearing instrument technology and audiological research that can help children with hearing loss to realize their full potential. Unfortunately, the company's standard training presentation was not generating the level of excitement and engagement the company wanted to achieve.

The Oticon Pediatrics team asked JK Design to help reinvent their national physician training program to truly engage doctors and provide a simple method of measuring their knowledge of Oticon products.

Solution

A custom-designed iPad app provided a streamlined solution to Oticon's complex training challenge. Using leading-edge technology, the JK Design team created an app with three distinct interfaces: Presenter, Team, and Projector. During a training session, the presenter and participating doctors are assigned iPads that link simultaneously to the presentation. The instructor controls the presentation using the Presenter interface; a monitor displays each slide via the Projector interface; and the doctors – working in teams – can respond to both multiple-choice and open-ended quiz questions through the Team interface.

Quiz results can be calculated and projected instantly to assess the effectiveness of the training and help direct follow-up questions and additional discussion. After each training session, this data is also emailed directly to Oticon from the presenter’s iPad.

The app provides an interesting, interactive experience for participating physicians – while enabling Oticon to seamlessly capture and track valuable data on their target market.

Results

The customer is always right – and Oticon's customers have been very impressed with the training app, as demonstrated by the company's positive post-training customer evaluations and on-site observations. In their glowing review, the pediatrics team also noted that “JK Design was extremely responsive and persistent to ensure we were successful with the app." To date, Oticon has used the iPad application with more than 700 customers in 35 cities across the US.
