Creating a distinctive inaugural report for a purpose-driven organization

For decades, The Best Buy Foundation has been committed to its mission to connect teens with tech and foster creative youth expression. 

And after nearly 30 years, it was time to tell the Foundation’s story in its own stand-alone annual report.

 

Cracking the code to a powerful story.

We started with key people interviews, a collaborative input session, and an in-depth review of the current reporting landscape to gain a deeper understanding of what the Foundation has accomplished and how their story could stand out.

Through our discovery process, we uncovered the narrative theme that would inspire increased engagement with donors and grantees: their commitment to “Building Brighter Futures,” with a focus on empowering teens to unlock their potential.

 

Data meets humanity.

With a theme in place, our next step was to bring “Building Brighter Futures” to life with a cohesive, unified story told through compelling content and elevated visual design.

JK worked closely with the Foundation team to define the structure and overall flow of the report. We crafted the story from cover to cover—incorporating the theme through powerful headlines and clear, concise body copy.

We also introduced real-world photos, quotes, and data visualization to tell an effective—yet engaging—story that reinforces key areas of focus and makes information digestible.

 

Engineering a distinct visual identity.

The Foundation wanted its report to pack a visual punch, while also aligning with the Best Buy corporate brand. Our goal was to create a youthful visual identity, reminiscent of the teens the Foundation works to support. So we leveraged Best Buy’s signature yellow and blue as accents on a bold black background. We also used their fonts in new and interesting ways, so that the overall design felt familiar yet fresh and different.

In the end, our partnership resulted in an inaugural report that tells a compelling story and presents complex information in a highly visual, engaging format—while elevating the Foundation’s credibility and inspiring increased support among its audiences.
